About Me – My Gluten-Free Journey & MyGFD.co.za

Welcome to MyGFD.co.za! I’m Bridget, based in the western part of Johannesburg, South Africa. After years in IT and data, I embraced a new chapter in 2023—working from home and sharing my passion for gluten-conscious living.

Why I Started This Blog

In 2017, I was diagnosed with gluten sensitivity, which meant a lifelong focus on limited gluten intake. At first, finding local resources was tough. Grocery shopping became a two-hour mission as I checked every label to ensure safety. Over time, I realised others faced the same challenges, so I created MyGFD.co.za to make the transition easier.

My Gluten-Free Journey

It took two to three years to feel confident in this lifestyle. Today, I love baking, cooking, and experimenting with recipes using locally available ingredients. Occasionally, I include lactose-free options and always indicate this in my recipes.

What Inspires Me

Family, friends, social media, food shows, and even novels spark my creativity. While I can’t travel everywhere, I enjoy recreating dishes in gluten-conscious versions for South Africans.

Why This Blog Exists

MyGFD.co.za is for anyone navigating a gluten-sensitive lifestyle in South Africa. You’ll find recipes, tips, and practical advice to save time and frustration. Recently, my doctor advised that I can reintroduce some gluten, but after eight years mostly gluten-free, I still love using these ingredients and recipes.

The turning point came in 2017 when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, which requires a lifelong gluten-free diet. At first, I struggled to find resources relevant to South Africa. While the UK had plenty of information, local guidance was scarce.

I began by checking every item in my kitchen, reading labels carefully, and redistributing two-thirds of my food and most of my spices to family and friends. Grocery shopping changed from a quick 20-minute errand to a two-hour mission. It wasn’t about a lack of food—it was about ensuring every product was safe for me.
